Children love to watch things grow, here are some ideas for exciting and easy to grow plants that will keep your little ones entertained outside this year!

The garden, allotment or local park can offer so much for little explorers from squashy soil to spiky hedges, tall trees to tiny flowers. The seasons provide a wonderful excuse to get out there, rain or shine and look at the changing leaves and beautiful colours.

Gardening with children is so much fun and gives them so many opportunities to experience and learn more about the natural world around them. With very young children you can start simply by watering flowers and plants together in the garden.

Try hunting for conkers, acorns and pine cones!

Go to the garden centre together or even the supermarket to find some different seed varieties, there are so many inexpensive and easy to grow seeds available.

Children love to quick results for their efforts, especially in the beginning so encourage your little gardeners with fast yielding plants. Vegetables they can harvest and taste are sure to be big hits too and encourage healthy eating at the same time.

Beans and peas are a good place to start and some can even be grown in a clear beaker to give a good view of the changes underground.

Children learn so much from growing plants and whether you have a garden or not you can still experiment with gardening. There are lots of windowsill varieties that will give your children just as much enjoyment and opportunity to learn about the world around them.

The whole family can enjoy the garden all through the year, you may even want to give them their own little plot or section in a flowerbed that they are in charge of. You can get lots more helpful information about growing plants from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Let’s get the whole family gardening this Spring!
